Domina

The term used to refer to a female Dominant in BDSM. It is derived from the Latin word for "Mistress". It was frequently employed in 19th-century European literature to depict a powerful woman in a Dominant role. In these literary works, she was often portrayed as a cold, heartless, and depraved figure, clad in leather and wielding a whip, who embraced the infliction of pain and humiliation upon men as her life philosophy.

The name "Domina" enjoys greater popularity within the European continental and Latin American BDSM communities when referring to female Dominants. For the male version, please see "Dominus".
