The 24/7 grapheme is a historically established way to indicate the continuity of an action, e.g. that the shop, cafe, or gas station is open non-stop. In the past also often spelled as 24/7/365, i.e. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

In the context of BDSM, the term 24/7 serves to distinguish episodic practices and occasional scenes (usually as part of the erotic play) from those practiced continuously. Traditionally, the expression 24/7 is associated with relationships of Dominance and submission and means that the partners are in this type of BDSM dynamics continuously, carrying it as fully as possible into their daily life. In Dominance and submission 24/7, the relationship extends beyond the confines of the bedroom or specific play sessions and permeates every aspect of the lives of the partners, even when they are physically separated for some reason.

In recent years, as BDSM has evolved and been supplemented with many new practices and types of interactions, the acronym 24/7 has taken on a broader meaning than it originally did and often serves to emphasize the degree of commitment to a given practice (eg. 24/7 chastity by people without a partner), fetish (24/7 wearing leather, latex or PVC) or to BDSM in general.

The expression 24/7 is often perceived (and used in communication between BDSM practitioners) as equivalent to lifestyle. Some critics see fundamental differences between the two. The designation 24/7 is unambiguously associated with invariability and continuity, while the expression lifestyle can be quite flexible, including not only the degree of commitment, which in many cases is the product of self-perception but also interests, preferences, beliefs, etc.
